LinkedIn Mistakes Not To Make
Profile Picture Is Not Professional
The fact is your profile has a higher chance of being viewed with a photo. So, when selecting a photo, stick to something professional that conveys you are approachable, professional and belong in the career of your choice. Don’t put in cartoon characters or the heads of cats and dogs as I see from time to time; leave those to Facebook or similar more casual social networks. Keep LinkedIn professional.
Overuse of Buzzwords
Buzzwords tend to be fluffy generalist statements made with words that are “in” at present. Sometimes it is hard to avoid them but don’t overuse them as using the common ones does not make you different and you need to emphasise in your profile how you are different so people choose you to Linkup with over others. Overused buzzwords on LinkedIn include: effective, analytical, strategic, patient, expert and driven.
Your Content Lacks Details
This is the biggest mistake I see. Too many profiles I see consist of a very limited or worse still no summary and the work history is just a job title and the company the person worked at and over which period. This is an almost worthless profile. LinkedIn is a networking site for professionals. To network successfully and connect with the professionals you want to connect with you must add details and key words so these people find you. At a conference you would have a display stand with details and examples of products or services. Your LinkedIn profile is the same as that display stand and you must flesh out your experience, responsibilities, skills gained and outcomes – add facts and figures where you can to add depth to the picture you are painting.
You Haven’t Adjusted Your Privacy Settings
If you’re currently employed and job searching, you probably don’t want your employer and colleagues to know. When you don’t adjust your privacy setting on LinkedIn, your activities like connecting to recruiters, making updates to your profile and other activities can appear on your feed as recent activity, and your contacts may even be notified of such changes by an email to them from LinkedIn as authorised by you!; because you did not update your settings. Avoid making your job search efforts obvious to such contacts by changing your privacy settings. There are plenty of demonstrations on the Help Centre and on YouTube showing how to do this.
